From Dogger Bank to Rockall

February 16, 2011 in Gilligan's, Quizzes

The rules were relaxed a little for last night’s quiz in Gilligan’s, Claremorris, certainly in relation to my own participation.  Upon arrival, I bumped into a couple of chaps I know from the local community radio station and I ended up sitting with them as we waited for the quiz to begin.  I didn’t expect things to remain this way as the names would shortly be drawn out of the hat. However, when that did occur, we were told that we could just stay where we were – which was a nice gesture.

We promptly adopted the team name of “CCR 94.6 FM”.  Well, it was one of those rare occasions when a team genuinely had a unifying fact to justify their grouping!

This week’s quiz was hosted by Liam, a local gent who was quite complimentary about my efforts last week.  I’m pleased to say that, after his quiz last night, the feeling is definitely mutual. Liam’s a fan of weather-related questions, by-the-way – both of the names in the post’s title came up last night. 🙂

Listen to me answers

February 10, 2011 in Gilligan's, Quizzes

It’s answer time.  Hopefully you found yesterday’s questions to be of a good standard and nicely varied.  That’s what I was aiming for anyway.

The team that won, ‘Brasso Polish’, scored 80/100 – which is pretty much bang on what I’d aim for. Like Goldilocks, I prefer when things are neither too hot nor too cold. 😉

Listen to me

February 9, 2011 in Gilligan's, Quizzes

After three months of attending Tuesday Quiz Night in Gilligan’s Bar, Claremorris, it was finally my turn to be quiz master last night.

There was a good crowd in, with several newcomers padding out the table numbers to eight. Perhaps they heard about the quiz somewhere in the last week? 🙂

Obviously I can’t produce the usual list of questions I missed so, instead, I’ll give you a selection of questions and post the picture rounds.

Hope you enjoy them!

Getting quizzical: answers

February 8, 2011 in Housekeeping, Quizzes

Sometimes, my memory isn’t quite what you’d expect the memory of a person who writes about quizzes to be.

Case in point, yesterday I added the 12 questions that had accompanied the Independent article in the paper to the bottom of my post about the same article.

Today, I completely forgot to post the answers to the questions (until now, that is)!  Sorry if you were waiting on them.

Getting quizzical in the Indo

After a short delay, no doubt caused by the small matter of the general election campaign, the much mentioned article featuring this website was published in today’s Irish Independent. Huzzah!

John Meagher’s article is on page 34 of the Metro edition I have in front of me.

If you can’t make it to the shops today or, who knows, that paper is sold out due to excessive demand, you can still view the article at this address: http://www.independent.ie/lifestyle/lets-get-quizzical-damien-owens-trivia-writer-2527992.html

Trivia with Tubridy

Here is the mp3 file of my appearance on the Tubridy radio show. Just click the play button to listen at your leisure.

I’m putting this here just in case the

on the RTÉ site becomes defunct some day.

Say cheese: answers

February 4, 2011 in Gilligan's, Quizzes

After a 24 hour delay, here are the answers to those questions I posted on Wednesday.

The more I look at this batch of questions, the more I think we should have won the other night. What was wrong with me that I couldn’t remember Porky Pig, for example?

I’m beginning to think that all these collective nouns have been coined just to make the quiz-goer’s life a hellish one. If I ever rule the world, there’ll be three official collective nouns: herd, flock and bunch. No more! 🙂

Latest from the news room

February 3, 2011 in Housekeeping

Good afternoon all.  Firstly, I’ll be posting the answers to yesterday’s questions later on today.  But first I’m going to fill you in on how my day has been.

This morning started off with a disappointment as I received an email which told me that the article in the Irish Independent had been put back until “early next week”. Sad, true, but what can one do? When I hear any more about it I’ll let you know.

Not being a big fan of driving in the early morning, I had travelled up to Dublin last night and stayed with my friends Bob, Keith and Maurice, who very kindly gave me a bed and a parking space. Thanks lads.  I had been asked to present myself at the RTÉ Radio Centre at 10am, with my appearance on-air scheduled for 10.15.

I was quite surprised to find that, after kicking up my heels in a waiting room, I was basically brought straight into the studio when the call came.  I had presumed I’d meet the team beforehand, perhaps during the 10am news.  I was introduced to Ryan Tubridy during an ad break, so obviously our preliminaries were quite rushed. I wonder if all radio presenters have Tubridy’s ability to engage in banter while keeping an eye on a clock counting down? I hadn’t even noticed he was doing it until, just at the end of a sentence (in our private chat), he pushed up a fader and, almost in the same cadence, announced “And we’re back …” into the microphone!
