Say cheese!
February 2, 2011 in Gilligan's, Quizzes
This Tuesday night’s quiz in Gilligan’s, Claremorris, featured a special guest: photographer Brian Farrell, who was there to take photos for the Irish Independent. His presence had some people wary at first but his easy-going manner soon caused everyone to relax and he was ignored for the rest of the evening – which is probably a good thing if you’re a photographer. We now have to wait until tomorrow’s paper hits the streets to see what his expert eye captured.
The quiz itself started a bit later than is normal, owing to the presence of a lot of extra customers in the pub. There’d been a funeral in the town earlier in the day and bar was still full of people.
“Wow. Ye get a good crowd in for this quiz”, Brian the photographer said.
In fact, the quiz had to wait until a lot of these people left!
When it did start, last night’s quiz was a very enjoyable one. ‘Comeback girl‘ Thérese came back (again!) but this time she was the quizmistress. She produced not one, but two picture rounds, and a varied collection of questions.
I almost got back into the winning groove – we lost by a point.*
Anyway, here are the questions we missed:
- What is the collective noun for a group of ferrets?
- Since the founding of the Premier League in England, two players have appeared in every season. Ryan Giggs is one, name the other.
- Which Irish abbey is
1529 years older than Westminster Abbey? - Australia is covered by how many time zones?
- Which acid is found in nettle stings and ant bites?
- Which character said “That’s all folks!” at the end of Looney Tunes cartoons?
- Which one word song title links Prince, Spandau Ballet and East 17?
- Who is older: Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera? **
- What is the currency of Indonesia?
- What do coin collectors call the ‘head’ side of a coin?
- In which city did a man fall to his death from a roller coaster last weekend?
- Who will play the title character in the upcoming movie Superman: Man of Steel?

Give ’em a go.
Answers tomorrow sometime. It’s going to be a busy day!
* I hate losing by one point! 🙁
** Dang and blast – a 50/50 shot and we still got it wrong!

Re the question about Westminster Abbey/Ballintubber Abbey, there’s a plaque in Ballintubber Abbey which has important dates and facts in the abbey’s history and that’s where I got the answer.
