Let’s go to Oslo: audio round

August 28, 2012 in Quizzes

Thanks to Sjef from The Oslo who replied to my request with details of the audio mashup used in last Friday night’s quiz.

It’s the work of a Norwegian dude called Frans Peter Bull Enger, who is also known by the much-handier moniker of Norwegian Recycling.  This brilliant creation of his is called ‘Miracles’.  Check it out and see how many you can name!  I think we got 10 of them.

If you’re completely stumped, I’ve included the youtube video of the same piece after the ‘Read the rest…’  It makes things a bit clearer by including the correct snippets of music videos with the audio samples.

Let’s go to Oslo for a quiz

August 27, 2012 in Quizzes

Recognise this trophy?

It was the best of quizzes, it was the worst of quizzes.  I shalln’t insult Dickens’ memory any further by continuing to paraphrase his work but that most-famous and adaptable of opening lines perfectly suits the quiz I took part in last Friday night.

The hosting venue, and organisers, were the staff of the Oslo Bar, Salthill, Co. Galway, which was celebrating its third birthday.  Delightfully, they decided to mark this auspicious event with a quiz.  This was great news (would that other venues would respect quizzes this much) as it lead to a party atmosphere.

Good point: This great atmosphere was created by a large crowd.  The place was packed – so much so that the organisers encouraged the formation of 6-person teams.     Oh, and there was a free barbecue afterwards!  Happy days!

Bad point: The party atmosphere wasn’t conducive to clear questions on the microphone.  This might have just been down to the radio mic being carried hither and yon throughout the night by lovely quiz-mistress not being up to snuff as the audio rounds were clear as a bell.  Either that or she is very soft spoken…

Good point: The quiz was run on the basis of there being four ’rounds’, which were divided into three ‘sections’ each.  I’m all for novel ideas when it comes to quiz organisation.  This particular one meant that the answer sheets only needed to be collected on four occasions.

Bad point: We were only given four answer sheets so they had to contain the answers to all three sections.  Not so bad, except that one of the ‘sections’ had 16 possible answers whilst another had 31!

Come and have a go

August 22, 2012 in Quiz Show, Quizzes

You probably ought to be able to at least name these three before you try the Championship Challenge.

Do you know your GAA facts? Would you like to win tickets to go to the All-Ireland semi-finals or even the finals themselves?  If so, you probably should give the Championship Challenge, which is running on Eircom’s GAA-based Experience More, site a go.

It’s a simple, quick-fire quiz in which you have to attempt to answer five questions in as short a time as possible.  Get 3/5 right and you’re entered into a weekly draw.  Get all five right and you’re in with a shot of topping one of the site’s four leaderboards (one for each province) which will entitle you to some fancy-shmancy corporate tickets to one of the All-Ireland finals.

To be honest, you’d have to be living under a stone to have missed this quiz, given the amount of promotion it’s received throughout the Summer, on tv and radio.  Sure, give it a go.  It’ll be one way for a Galway hurling fan to get a ticket.

In other challenging news, I’d like to wish Stephen Dodding, our surrogate Irishman (during last year’s European Quiz Championship in Bruges), all the best for his appearance on first episode of the new series of Only Connect.  Yes, I know, he’s already done the show so wishing him well doesn’t make too much sense but, still, let’s hope there’s nothing too embarassing on the tape!

Never mind me – I’m probably just jealous that he got to meet Victoria Coren.  Anyway, the show airs on Monday next, August 27, at 8.30pm on BBC Four.  You should watch it.

Post-Olympics good news glow

August 14, 2012 in Housekeeping, Interactive

Welcome back all. Or rather, welcome back to myself, as I’ve returned from my holidays on the lovely Iveragh Peninsula.  And it was lovely, the weather was fine.  Alas, the tv reception wasn’t so good so I missed a lot of the Olympics.  Still, that gave me the excuse to actually go outside and enjoy the scenery.

I’ve returned to a couple of pieces of good news. Firstly, this site right here has been long-listed for the 2012 Irish Blog Awards!  Thanks so much to all of you who took the time to send in a nomination.

Secondly, we now have a date for the IQO‘s first provincial Quiz Grand Prix.  It will take place in The Clarendon Bar, Derry, on Saturday 29th September.  I’ll have more info for you on the event as they get decided on.  Right now, I can say that there will be singles and team quizzes and that all are welcome!  I’ll keep you all up-to-date here on the site over the next few weeks.

In other news, this year’s European Quizzing Championships will take place in Tartu, Estonia, from the 9th to 11th of November.  If you’d like to find out more about the event check out eqc2012.kilb.ee/index.php/en/.  Again, there’ll be more info here, as we get closer to the event.

Finally, in the wake of the brilliant 2012 Summer Olympics in London, I’ve created a little Olympics-themed quiz for you all to try out.  It’ll get your brains back into action as the Quizpocalypse comes to an end.  Roll on September! Click ‘Read the rest…’ to do the quiz.
