Dublin Quiz Open 2013

February 26, 2013 in Grand Prix, IQO

spire-questionReminder: The inaugural Dublin Quiz Open takes place on Saturday in The Addison Lodge, Glasnevin, Dublin 9.

This is the first of the Irish Quiz Organisation‘s quarterly quiz opens, which will take place in various venues throughout the country, and will feed in to selection for the Irish team for the European Quizzing Championships next November in Liverpool.  The event is, as hopefully the name indicates, open to all and costs just €5 to enter.  The day will feature a morning of inidividual quizzing (including the international Hot-100!) and an afternoon of team quizzing.

Don’t feel as if you need to bring a team with you for the afternoon’s event, by the way.  Teams can (and no doubt will) be created on the day!

The event kicks off at 11am and will go until around 5pm. If you’d like to find out more, please visit the event’s Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/events/418380344916922/

I’m going myself.  Hopefully, I’ll see some of you there too.

And the Oscar goes to…

February 25, 2013 in Interactive

borgnine_with_oscarIn the first of two posts today, I will do my best to honour last night’s Academy Award ceremony.  Not that I’ve seen them yet.  Ever since the BBC lost the rights to Sky Movies on this side of the Atlantic, I’ve had to make do with the edited highlights programme on RTÉ the following night.  Without even looking at the TV schedules, I am fairly confident that this will be all I’ll see again this year.

Sorry, rant over.  Back to quizzing.  This post features a selection of the questions I asked at The King’s Head movie quiz earlier this month.

Furthermore, this post also marks a comeback for the site’s interactive quizzes – which I have to admit I pretty much forgot about for the last few months.  Anyway, you can once again have a go and see where it puts you on the rankings table.  Be sure and login first though, if you want your score to be recorded.

Right, without further ado, click on the ‘Read the rest…’ link to see the questions.

Good news and bad news

February 17, 2013 in Housekeeping, Quizzes

Firstly, I’ll start with the good news. The first International Quizzing Association Hot-100 season ended last week and there were some great results from our Irish competitors.

In total, 28 people from the island of Ireland took part during the year and, of those, nine finished inside the top 100! This is amazing stuff, given that over 1,900 people took part in at least one event.

I’m also happy to say that I finished up the 25th ranked quizzer in the world! Whoop! Even better, I finished higher than the Germans. Double whoop!

Hot-100 final placings

An excerpt from the final quiz world rankings table of 2012/13.

If anyone out there would like to get involved with the Hot-100, there’s no better time than next month, as it will be the first of the new season. The entry period runs from February 26 to March 4. For more info, drop me an email at quizmaster@tablequiz.net.

The bad news also relates to emails. Membership of the site has skyrocketed in the last six weeks. It’s now averaging about 15 registrations per day. However, I feel this is no cause for celebration as I reckon most of those are bogus spammers. Furthermore, my inbox has been almost flooded with the amount of spurious entries I’ve received via the Running a quiz? page.

Because of this, I have been forced to add a captcha to that page. Sorry if this slows genuine quiz organisers down – I know a lot of people aren’t fans. Hopefully everyone will understand though that I need to come up with some way of weeding out the bots.

Where have I been?

February 15, 2013 in IQO, Quizzes

Oscar-StatueHi everyone. Sorry for the almost three weeks of no posts. I’ve been quite the busy bunny in the interim.

Firstly, the latest on the European Podcast Awards is not very clear. According to the awards’ blog, public voting has now ended and the top 16 podcasts have been forwarded on to the jury for consideration. Are we on the final shortlist? I don’t know. They aren’t going to inform anyone until the final results are announced. 🙁

There are a couple of big quizzing events coming up in the next few weeks. Firstly, the Irish Quiz Organisation’s first quiz open of 2013 will take place in The Addison Lodge, Glasnevin, Dublin, on March 2nd. This great day of quizzing is open to all and will feature individual and team events. It starts at 11am in the morning and costs just €5 to enter. For more information, check out the event’s Facebook page.

Next up, the first-ever Celtic Nations Quizzing Championships will take place in Edinburgh on the weekend of April 27th and 28th. The best quizzers from Ireland and Wales will travel to the Scottish capital to take on the home side in a series of events. It promises to be great fun and I’ll be covering it here on the site, of course.

After the Fact looks set for a very exciting end. After last night’s antepenultimate* episode, the series is tied! We might be heading for a playoff, just like last year.

Lastly, one of the things which kept me so busy over the last week was the creation and hosting of an Academy Awards quiz in The King’s Head, Galway, on Monday night last. It had its low points (the projector didn’t work very well) but it was still an enjoyable night of quizzing. I’ll do a post on it tomorrow, with some questions to test you all.
