Some Christmas answers

December 23, 2013 in Quizzes

santa_jesusHo ho ho. Happy Christmas week to you all!

Before I toddle off into quiz obscurity for the next two weeks, I have a few notices to announce.

  • Ireland is hosting the Celtic Nations 2014, a weekend quizzing event for the international teams representing Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The IQO have now announced the dates and venue for the event. It will take place on the last weekend of April in the West County Hotel, Chapelizod, Dublin. As well as the team matches, the weekend will also include an open-to-all Grand Prix, a social quiz and some other fun events. It should be a great couple of days. You can find out more info at the event’s Facebook page.
  • Have you been trying the Five For Friday quizzes on the IQO website? This week’s quiz also includes a rankings list based on the results throughout 2013 so you can check how you got on. I’m on there somewhere!
  • A perennial favourite in my house, the Sunday Independent sports crossword-of-the-year was published yesterday. Be sure and give it a try!
  • Like busses, we had no quiz shows on Irish tv for years and now we’ve had several in the last three months. TV3 are currently recruiting for the latest, a show called Pressure Point. You can find out more and submit your name via the show’s webpage: www.tv3.ie/pressure_point.php

Some Christmas questions

December 16, 2013 in Quizzes

santa-quizzerLast Thursday evening I hosted a Christmas-themed quiz in Claremorris, as part of Claremorris Community Radio‘s fundraising drive.

We all had a good night, albeit “we” was quite a small number as not much of a crowd turned up. 🙁

Anyway, for those of you who couldn’t make it, please find attached a sample of the night’s questions and the two picture rounds. We also had a couple of music rounds, obviously, what with Christmas number ones and carols and all that, but I’ll spare you those today.

Anyway, here you go, something to get you in the festive mood. 🙂

A million sports answers

December 4, 2013 in Quizzes

sports-productionRightyo, let’s put all you sports (question) fans out of any misery I may have inflicted over the last few days with not one but two posts of questions.

I’d say after Friday and Monday’s posts, we’re all set for sports questions for the next few months. 🙂

Did anyone notice my footnote on Monday that said that the question “On which racecourse did AP Mc Coy recently achieve 4,000 career wins?” had appeared in both of these quizzes?  Clearly, it’s in the quizzing ether at the moment.  It, and its unusual pronunciation (think “Leicester” and “Worcester”), could probably be called zeitgeist.

Honour and glory in Athlone

December 2, 2013 in Quizzes

Guest blog! Yes, I know you’re probably waiting for the answers to the questions posted on Friday. However, this is more news-worthy. My partner from the Pairs at the European Quizzing Championships, Mark Henry, took part in the massive St Brigid’s International Sports Quiz on Friday night and here is his report. Tomorrow, I will post a special, bumper, double post of sports answers!

eaglesOn Friday night all the girly cousins and their mammies were coming over to my house to watch the Late Late Toy Show with my two very excited daughters. So I had a very difficult choice: to stay in with Ryan Tubridy or attend the St. Brigids GAA club International Sports Quiz in the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone. Anyhow, my loyalty to my teammates in The New Eagles (made up of Peter, Lorcan Sr., Michael and myself) finally won out.

Normally, when I go to table quizzes my local team’s policy is to give the prize back to the charity. However, with prizes of €3,000, €2,000 and €1,000 per team for 1st, 2nd and 3rd, this wasn’t going to happen tonight! This was not withstanding the two well-deserving charities, Mayo-Roscommon Hospice and Pieta House, that were benefiting.

It promised to be a night full of craic with a couple of the lads that were on Off the Ball (Newstalk) until recently compering. There were 80 tables competing. In other words, 319 testosterone- and probably Guinness-filled Jimmy McGees. I say 319 as I think I spotted one brave lady among them all.

Before the quiz, I was hoping the questions were going to be more international than national but was reassured that we had Irish soccer and GAA experts in Lorcan Sr. and Peter respectively. In the bar, Michael was listing of all the Gold Cup/Grand National winners of the last 40 years (my specialist subject) so I was saying these lads don’t need me at all.
