The Irish Quiz Organisation (IQO) oversees competitive quizzing in Ireland, particularly the organisation of the Irish heat of the World Quizzing Championships and the selection of a team for the European Quizzing Championships.
The IQO was founded at a meeting in Buccaneers Rugby Club, Athlone, on Saturday, June 2, 2012. The following committee was elected on that day:
- Chairperson – David Fay (Dublin)
- Secretary – John Nolan (Roscommon)
- Treasurer – Micheál Coyne (Galway)
- PRO – Michelle Walsh (Galway)
- Competitions Officer –
Paddy Duffy (Donegal), Derek Cray (Dublin) - OCMs – John O’Sullivan, Colm O’Sullivan and John Groarke (all Dublin)
Several iniatives were discussed at the inaugural meeting, including:
- The holding of seasonal quiz opens, presumably once per province, throughout the calendar year
- Restarting the All-Ireland table quiz championship, under the auspices of the IQO
- Endeavouring to send two teams of four to the European Quiz Championships, which take place in November
- Being available to assist quiz organisers throughout the country
