Some Christmas answers

December 23, 2013 in Quizzes

santa_jesusHo ho ho. Happy Christmas week to you all!

Before I toddle off into quiz obscurity for the next two weeks, I have a few notices to announce.

  • Ireland is hosting the Celtic Nations 2014, a weekend quizzing event for the international teams representing Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The IQO have now announced the dates and venue for the event. It will take place on the last weekend of April in the West County Hotel, Chapelizod, Dublin. As well as the team matches, the weekend will also include an open-to-all Grand Prix, a social quiz and some other fun events. It should be a great couple of days. You can find out more info at the event’s Facebook page.
  • Have you been trying the Five For Friday quizzes on the IQO website? This week’s quiz also includes a rankings list based on the results throughout 2013 so you can check how you got on. I’m on there somewhere!
  • A perennial favourite in my house, the Sunday Independent sports crossword-of-the-year was published yesterday. Be sure and give it a try!
  • Like busses, we had no quiz shows on Irish tv for years and now we’ve had several in the last three months. TV3 are currently recruiting for the latest, a show called Pressure Point. You can find out more and submit your name via the show’s webpage: www.tv3.ie/pressure_point.php

Finally, click the ‘Read the rest…’ link to see the answers to the Christmas questions I posted last week.

Some Christmas questions

December 16, 2013 in Quizzes

santa-quizzerLast Thursday evening I hosted a Christmas-themed quiz in Claremorris, as part of Claremorris Community Radio‘s fundraising drive.

We all had a good night, albeit “we” was quite a small number as not much of a crowd turned up. 🙁

Anyway, for those of you who couldn’t make it, please find attached a sample of the night’s questions and the two picture rounds. We also had a couple of music rounds, obviously, what with Christmas number ones and carols and all that, but I’ll spare you those today.

Anyway, here you go, something to get you in the festive mood. 🙂

Have a good one everybody!

We’ll be back quizzing after Stephen’s Day.

In the meantime, enjoy a few games of Trivial Pursuit after Christmas dinner.  🙂

Now that’s what I call…

… a Christmas quiz.*

The final quiz of 2011 took place in Gilligan’s, Claremorris, on Tuesday last and, fittingly, it was Christmas themed.

The picture round featured 12 “santas”, there was a round in which we had to name the carols which matched the cryptic clues and we had a round in which the questions were nothing to do with Christmas but the answers were homonyms of things that were.  It was very well done.

I was on the same team for the second week in a row.  That’s right, even though the tables are pulled from a hat, we three (kings) managed to end up together once again.  Thankfully, while we hadn’t been anywhere near winning last week, this time we managed to take home the final prize of the year.

It turns out we know a lot about Christmas.

‘Tis the Season: answers

December 16, 2010 in Gilligan's, Quizzes

Here we go so.  The answers to the questions I posted yesterday.

No doubt some of you thought “Oh how did he get that one wrong?!” on several occasions.  All I can do is come over all Gallic, shrug my shoulders and say “Bouffe”. The free chili chicken wings must have affected my brain.

Mind you, we did have an awful time with question #11 below.  By accident or design, the exact reverse of that question had been asked earlier in the night i.e. “Person X invented what Christmas item in 1843?” As we’d actually fluked the right answer then, I hadn’t bothered to take note of this fact, letting it slip from my brain like the curriculum of a completed exam. Oh, the frustration that decision caused about one hour later!

‘Tis the Season

December 15, 2010 in Gilligan's, Quizzes

Even Santa struggles with Christmas questions. After the ice-enforced two week break, I was pleased on two accounts when I made my way back to Gilligan’s for the Tuesday Quiz Night, last evening.  Firstly, it turned out that the quiz itself had been called off for the past fortnight – so I hadn’t missed anything.  Secondly, as it was the last quiz before Christmas, it was their annual “Christmas Quiz”!

What did that mean? Well, firstly there was free food! Happy days for me!  Also, there was a free raffle for all participants. Lady luck finally smiled on yours truly and I finished the night with a box of Milk Tray under my arm… 🙂

Alas, the final part of the seasonal trinity, questions about Christmas, didn’t suit me near as well.
