Guess who’s back answers (bonus track)

October 13, 2012 in Gilligan's, Quizzes

Below you will find the answers to the questions I posed in yesterday’s post, Guess who’s back.

I’m getting them posted today for two reasons.  Firstly, myself and Mrs Tablequiz are off to the Irish Blog Awards tonight so, you’d never know, I may need to do another post tomorrow. ;-) Then again, I probably won’t but I intend having a good night in any event!

Secondly, I spotted a nice little quiz on The Journal this morning.  It features 10 lines from Irish literature (or poetry) and you simply have to identify the author and the title of the work.  I surprised myself by getting 7 of the 10 right.  You can have a go at: www.thejournal.ie/can-you-identify-these-irish-literary-quotations-629772-Oct2012/

Guess who’s back

October 12, 2012 in Gilligan's, Quizzes

October is here and, right one cue, the Tuesday night quiz at Gilligan’s, Claremorris, started up again on Tuesday last.

Truth be told though, it was due to start the week before but such was the low turnout (I was part of that problem, alas) that it was postponed for seven days.  This Tuesday the crowd was nothing to write home about either but, with 11 people, we were able to press on albeit with only three tables taking part.  Let’s hope that numbers pick up during the weeks ahead.  Certainly for next week, when yours truly is, at short-notice, due to be quiz master. ;-)

My own team-of-three suffered the ignominy of being in joint-first at half-time before collapsing over the second section to finish third.  Yes, that is third out of three!  Our final score of 83 was four behind second place and a further point behind the eventual winners.  Winners who themselves had been ‘last’ at half-time!

Our terrible finish was tempered by going out on a high.  We scored a perfect 12 in the picture round – in spite of the fact that at least three of them were educated guesses.  Quite well-educated, as it turned out..!

You can check the pictures out after the jump, along with the questions that cost us dearly. Go on, give them a go.

This’ll test ya

March 1, 2012 in Gilligan's, Interactive, Quizzes

After several weeks of building it up, I’m delighted to announce that our Quiz Rankings page is now online.  You can access it from the main menu or via this address: tablequiz.net/quiz-rankings/

To get your name on the ranking list, simply make sure you’ve logged-in before completing one of our new (fancy shmancy) interactive quizzes.  Your score will automatically be added to the list. Owing to the fact that the quizzes already published have been of differing lengths (and will be in the future, no doubt) I’ve decided to use the percentage mark from each quiz as a points score.  This makes for a level playing field I think.  Come the end of the year, we’ll have an official final table and the bigging-up of the winner.

Until then though, you’ll probably want to get quizzing.  Well, blow me over, don’t I have a quiz here for you!

Last Tuesday night’s quiz in Gilligan’s, Claremorris, was tough.  I was lucky enough to be on the winning team and we only scored 72/104.  It also featured a genius picture round, which I will put up tomorrow, as it deserves its own post.

Let’s try something different

February 1, 2012 in Gilligan's, Interactive, Quizzes

The post title refers both to this site and to Gilligan’s Tuesday Quiz Night, which was a little different this week as it served as a fund-raiser for the Claremorris Boy Scouts.

We had all the table quiz regulars – even a raffle!  Still, when push came to shove the quiz was the same as ever, with questions being provided in a humorous manner by Joe, the night’s host. The fact that he won a raffle prize himself during the night only added to his good mood. :-)

I was teamed up with Aidan and Andrew and our three heads did quite well, as we ran out winners on a terrific score of 93/102.  A good start was half the battle and we didn’t get a question wrong until #7 of round three!

Back to the blog and I’m going to try something new in this post.  Our new system allows for the creation of interactive quizzes so, instead of my normal posting of the questions today and then the answers whenever tomorrow, I’m going to use the system to both provide the answers and to test you all out. :-)

Let’s hope it works.  As an added little something, if you do the quiz whilst logged-in, it files your score away.  I’ll then collate all the scores throughout the year and produce a ranking table.

Move along

May 4, 2011 in Housekeeping

Nothing to see here, I’m afraid.  Gilligan’s Quiz Night returned last night but the evening’s quiz master (politely) asked me not to include their quiz on this site.  I will honour this request.

It’s probably for the best, mind you as my team got absolutely hammered (and I don’t mean in the drinking way).  We ended up on 74/100, languishing in fourth or fifth place, miles behind the winners on 92. Yikes.

It was revealed afterwards that one of the members of that team had recently won a contest called the ‘Brain of Ireland’.  I can’t say I’d ever heard of this title before but it certainly sounds impressive. It also lessened the shame (slightly) of losing by such a margin.

We’ll return to our usual transmission, later this week.

One of those nights

April 7, 2011 in Gilligan's, Quizzes

A clue for #12.

Following last week’s hiatus, I resumed my usual Tuesday night travels to Gilligan’s, Claremorris, and its Quiz Night.  Alas, it wasn’t to be a triumphal return.

Myself and my randomly assigned team had one of ‘those’ nights. Mental blanks on answers you know, changing correct answers to incorrect ones, mishearing the question – we did them all. We still came in second, four points behind the winners, but it all felt a bit self-inflicted.

Hopefully, I used up enough bad luck and bad judgement to leave me in the clear for at least my next four quizzes!

Two out of two answers

November 12, 2010 in Gilligan's, Quizzes

“Two parts of the eye were discussing who told better puns. The debate raged on, ’til one said to the other, ‘You, my friend, are simply the pupil. I am by far the cornea of the two of us.’…”

Boom, and indeed, boom.

Getting back to the point of the blog, after a day of ‘batten down the hatches‘, I now have the time to post the answers to the questions I posted on Wednesday.

Eye hope you weren’t blinded by …. [I need to stop it. Seriously!]

Two out of two

November 10, 2010 in Gilligan's, Quizzes

One week on from my discovery of the weekly quiz in Gilligan’s Pub, Claremorris, I headed back to see if my first visit had been a happy fluke.

I was on my own this week as my usual buddies were all otherwise occupied.  It’s a benefit of the random draw method of team selection at this event that you can turn up solo and not feel like Johnny-no-mates. So I paid my €3 entry fee and got assigned to a team.

The turnout must have been down on the previous week as teams were made up of just three people. I got John, a local chap who unashamedly watches soap operas (i.e. a very useful man to have on a team) and Aiden, a retired gentleman from Dunmore.  Aiden may have an intriguing back story but, alas, we didn’t get to go into it too deeply.  He did reveal to us that he got 97% in Ancient Greek when he did the Leaving Cert. Such an achievement commands respect!
