Good news and bad news

February 17, 2013 in Housekeeping, Quizzes

Firstly, I’ll start with the good news. The first International Quizzing Association Hot-100 season ended last week and there were some great results from our Irish competitors.

In total, 28 people from the island of Ireland took part during the year and, of those, nine finished inside the top 100! This is amazing stuff, given that over 1,900 people took part in at least one event.

I’m also happy to say that I finished up the 25th ranked quizzer in the world! Whoop! Even better, I finished higher than the Germans. Double whoop!

Hot-100 final placings

If anyone out there would like to get involved with the Hot-100, there’s no better time than next month, as it will be the first of the new season. The entry period runs from February 26 to March 4. For more info, drop me an email at quizmaster@tablequiz.net.

The bad news also relates to emails. Membership of the site has skyrocketed in the last six weeks. It’s now averaging about 15 registrations per day. However, I feel this is no cause for celebration as I reckon most of those are bogus spammers. Furthermore, my inbox has been almost flooded with the amount of spurious entries I’ve received via the Running a quiz? page.

Because of this, I have been forced to add a captcha to that page. Sorry if this slows genuine quiz organisers down – I know a lot of people aren’t fans. Hopefully everyone will understand though that I need to come up with some way of weeding out the bots.

The July Hot-100

July 3, 2012 in Quizzes

The busy state of the quiz calendar currently belies the opinion I expressed last month that the Summer would be the quizpocalypse. Well, it is around here. If only I lived in Dublin…

That being so, I will be getting a quiz fix this week as we are now in the July window of the International Hot 100 quiz. This is an official World Quizzing event that anyone can take part in. All you need is a minimum of two people to meet up and take the quiz. You can then correct each others answers and submit them to the International Quizzing Association for inclusion on the ranking list. Scores must be submitted by 10pm on Monday evening next, at 10pm, and entry is €3.75 per person.

You can get your hands on the official questions either via worldquizrankings.com or myself, on john@tablequiz.net.

This week’s quizzing…

March 27, 2012 in Housekeeping, Quiz Show

A few things of interest for you this week:

  1. Last week, I converted the Quizopædia into a wiki.  You can now add facts or correct errors so please feel free to do so.  I’m going to retain the ability to have final say on things though so no funny stuff!
  2. The final (scheduled) episode of After the Fact will be broadcast live on Thursday evening at 7pm.  If you’d like to listen in, please go to Claremorris Community Radio‘s page anytime around then and click on the Listen Live link.  The series is finely poised with Team A leading by a single show.  Thus, if Team B can get the win on Thursday (the topic is Zero, by-the-way) the series will have to go into extra-time! That is, we’ll have an extra show next week. Either way, this week’s show will be quite exciting.  For more info, check out our After the Fact page.
  3. The next competition window in the IQA’s Hot 100 world quiz rankings event opens tomorrow, Wednesday 28th, and runs until 10pm on Monday next.  If you’d like to give it a go, please email me at quizmaster@tablequiz.net.  Only two of us gave it a go last month so we’d definitely be keen on some more company.  We’ll probably do it in Galway city again, sometime over the weekend.  Whatever suits people best.
