To quiz or not to quiz answers … and more

April 3, 2012 in Housekeeping, Quizzes

Firstly, I must say thank you to Evelyn for her report on last Friday night’s quiz. I still cling on to a hope that some day she’ll see the light regarding quizzing… ;-)

After the break, you can see the answers to the picture rounds she included in her post, To quiz or not to quiz.

In other news:

  1. I am the host at Gilligan’s Tuesday night quiz this evening. Please feel free to come on in if you’re in the neighbourhood (of Claremorris). Admission, as always, is €3 per person.
  2. Following a great win by Team B last Thursday night, the first series of After the Fact has gone in to extra-time. The (definitively) final showdown takes place this Thursday as Andrew and Marcella take each other on without the assistance of team-mates. You can listen in on Claremorris Community Radio at 7pm on Thursday night or prepare yourself by listening to our previous shows.
  3. Think you know your food? I’m hosting Galway’s first ever Foodie Quiz on Monday night in The King’s Head bar, on High Street. Tables of four are just €20 and this includes a bottle of wine! If you’d like to enter a team, please email john@tablequiz.net.

Right, on to those answers…

Do you know Jack’s answers?

March 21, 2012 in Quizzes

Here are the answers to the questions and picture rounds posted in Do you know jack? the other day.

Often, a winning team is faced with a dilemma with their winnings, if those winnings are cash.  Thankfully, this wasn’t a problem for ourselves on Friday last as we got a (non-Christmassy) hamper featuring bottles of whiskey, yummy Kettle Chips and Easter Eggs.  It genuinely was a hamper as it came in a nice wicker basket and, obviously enough, featured four of each item thus preventing any arguments breaking out over the Easter Eggs. :-)

Click the link to see the answers. By-the-by, how did you do with that tricky final one? We thought the answer was obvious but, judging by the reaction in the room, that wasn’t the case at all tables.

Do you know jack?

March 19, 2012 in Quizzes

Strangely, with all the quizzing that goes up and down this land, it’s rare that a quiz establishes itself sufficiently that it becomes an annual event.  The Claremorris AFC sports quiz is one such contest but they’re quite rare.

So it was cool that, last Friday night, Ger and myself entered the Ballyhaunis Town FC quiz in The Hazel bar as the defending champions.  12 months ago we’d had a very good night in the company of my father and father-in-law.  Not only did we win the quiz, but we also won most of the raffle prizes!

This year, the quiz veterans were both otherwise engaged so we had to call upon two chaps of our own vintage: Kevin and Adrian. Our team turned out to be, erm, a bit better than everyone else in the room and we ended up winning by just 14 points.  eek! :-)   We finished on 92/100 and no-one else broke 80.

We only won a bottle of wine in the raffle though…

That’s entertainment: pic answers

March 10, 2012 in Movies, Quizzes

Here are the answers to that crafty picture round I posted yesterday in: That’s entertainment.

Personally, I think one or two of these were a bit of a stretch – and that’s after I found out the answers! The one on the right being one of the stranger ones, required a bit of a left turn in the brain to allow it to stand. Numer 9 also fits into this category.

Still, they are a challenge and an entertaining one at that. As usual, click on the Read the rest link to see the answers.

That’s entertainment

March 9, 2012 in Interactive, Movies, Quizzes

At quite short notice we discovered that the monthly movie quiz in Kelly’s Bar, Galway, was going ahead last Monday.  The people who run the quiz seem to put great stock in keeping in contact with their regulars.  For example, we’re encouraged to put down a contact email for the team on our answer books.  However, something definitely went wrong last weekend as the word didn’t get out until Monday afternoon that the quiz was going ahead.  And that was on their Facebook wall which, thankfully, one of our number happened to check.

While I’m on the topic of communication, this quiz also fell foul of one of my personal bugbears.  The score. To whit, what is it? How are we getting on? They announced the score on just two occasions: half-time and full-time.  At half-time, two teams were way out in front (on 37 and 36 out of 40) and we were leading the peloton on 32.  We continued as we had been, safe in the knowledge that surely we were too far behind to win and we’d hopefully hang on to third.  Yet when the final scores were announced we’d come in second – two points ahead of third and just two points behind the winners. If only we’d known we were in the hunt!

They’re not the worst, mind you.  Last Friday night I attended a quiz in Claremorris Golf Club where the score wasn’t called out for the entire night! My team finished on 84/100 and hadn’t a clue if that was a good, bad or indifferent score.  We came fourth, if you’re interested, with the teams above us finishing on 86, 89 and 91 points.

Let’s try something different: answers

February 3, 2012 in Gilligan's, Quizzes

The answers to the picture round included in Let’s try something different are posted after the Read the rest… link.

I must tell you all how I’m quite excited about a quiz I’m due to attend this evening.  It’s for the local national school and it’s taking place in the local golf club but neither of those facts is very interesting.

No, what will make this quiz special is: buzzers! As part of its teaching equipment the school has 30 buzzers, each containing four answer buttons.  I haven’t seen them yet so I don’t know if they’re different colours or A-B-C-D. At tonight’s quiz, each table will have one of these devices and will be asked to simply press a button after each question is called out from the floor.  Presumably there’ll be a time limit on each one as the system will have to move on to the next question.  Calls of “Could you repeat question four again please?” will notably be absent tonight.

While enforcing a time limit on teams might seem hard, this will be offset by the fact that each question will be followed by four potential answers.  I feel sorry for the poor question setter who, after coming up with each question, also had to think up three other (believable) answers!

Of course, I’ll report on how it went over the next few days.

Let’s try something different

February 1, 2012 in Gilligan's, Interactive, Quizzes

The post title refers both to this site and to Gilligan’s Tuesday Quiz Night, which was a little different this week as it served as a fund-raiser for the Claremorris Boy Scouts.

We had all the table quiz regulars – even a raffle!  Still, when push came to shove the quiz was the same as ever, with questions being provided in a humorous manner by Joe, the night’s host. The fact that he won a raffle prize himself during the night only added to his good mood. :-)

I was teamed up with Aidan and Andrew and our three heads did quite well, as we ran out winners on a terrific score of 93/102.  A good start was half the battle and we didn’t get a question wrong until #7 of round three!

Back to the blog and I’m going to try something new in this post.  Our new system allows for the creation of interactive quizzes so, instead of my normal posting of the questions today and then the answers whenever tomorrow, I’m going to use the system to both provide the answers and to test you all out. :-)

Let’s hope it works.  As an added little something, if you do the quiz whilst logged-in, it files your score away.  I’ll then collate all the scores throughout the year and produce a ranking table.
