General and Galway knowledge quiz

February 20, 2014 in Quizzes

Where did this come from?

Where did this come from?

My first turn in a quiz hotseat in 2014 took place last night in the King’s Head in Galway.

This was the first of four quizzes I will be hosting over the coming months and a pretty good crowd of 18 tables took part. Of the 18, there was one team way out in front. The winners (named, in up-to-the-minute fashion, ‘GSOC hackers’) scored 82/100, a massive 14 points ahead of two teams in second place.

There was a second prize on offer so a playoff for this then ensued. Thankfully we were all spared the nightmare of playoffs, that the playoff itself ends up as a tie, when one of the teams, the Spartans, had a clear 3-0 win. I think the team who ended up in third had won a couple of raffle prizes earlier, so hopefully everyone left happy.

The quiz was in aid of a defibrilator and defibrilation training for the Latin Quarter area of the city – a very worthy cause. It was advertised as being on “General and Galway Knowledge” so I did my best to include at least one Galway-related question per round. Then, for safety’s sake, I included an entire round of Galway trivia!

I’ve included a sample of the night’s questions after the break.

Some Christmas answers

December 23, 2013 in Quizzes

santa_jesusHo ho ho. Happy Christmas week to you all!

Before I toddle off into quiz obscurity for the next two weeks, I have a few notices to announce.

  • Ireland is hosting the Celtic Nations 2014, a weekend quizzing event for the international teams representing Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The IQO have now announced the dates and venue for the event. It will take place on the last weekend of April in the West County Hotel, Chapelizod, Dublin. As well as the team matches, the weekend will also include an open-to-all Grand Prix, a social quiz and some other fun events. It should be a great couple of days. You can find out more info at the event’s Facebook page.
  • Have you been trying the Five For Friday quizzes on the IQO website? This week’s quiz also includes a rankings list based on the results throughout 2013 so you can check how you got on. I’m on there somewhere!
  • A perennial favourite in my house, the Sunday Independent sports crossword-of-the-year was published yesterday. Be sure and give it a try!
  • Like busses, we had no quiz shows on Irish tv for years and now we’ve had several in the last three months. TV3 are currently recruiting for the latest, a show called Pressure Point. You can find out more and submit your name via the show’s webpage: www.tv3.ie/pressure_point.php

Finally, click the ‘Read the rest…’ link to see the answers to the Christmas questions I posted last week.

Some Christmas questions

December 16, 2013 in Quizzes

santa-quizzerLast Thursday evening I hosted a Christmas-themed quiz in Claremorris, as part of Claremorris Community Radio‘s fundraising drive.

We all had a good night, albeit “we” was quite a small number as not much of a crowd turned up. 🙁

Anyway, for those of you who couldn’t make it, please find attached a sample of the night’s questions and the two picture rounds. We also had a couple of music rounds, obviously, what with Christmas number ones and carols and all that, but I’ll spare you those today.

Anyway, here you go, something to get you in the festive mood. 🙂

A million sports answers

December 4, 2013 in Quizzes

sports-productionRightyo, let’s put all you sports (question) fans out of any misery I may have inflicted over the last few days with not one but two posts of questions.

I’d say after Friday and Monday’s posts, we’re all set for sports questions for the next few months. 🙂

Did anyone notice my footnote on Monday that said that the question “On which racecourse did AP Mc Coy recently achieve 4,000 career wins?” had appeared in both of these quizzes?  Clearly, it’s in the quizzing ether at the moment.  It, and its unusual pronunciation (think “Leicester” and “Worcester”), could probably be called zeitgeist.

There’s always next year

November 29, 2013 in Quizzes

ryan-crotty-scoresMan, oh man. The Claremorris AFC sports quiz has become the bane of my life.

A quick recap. Two years ago myself, Ger, Willie and Andy hit the lead after round 8, only to perform disasterously in the following (picture) round and finished fifth. Last year the same team were in third all night long and couldn’t close the gap on the teams above. But at least we finished on the podium.

Last night, with new team member Jason in for the now-emigrated Andy, we were in second place right from the first round. Seven rounds later, we were still second, just one point behind the same leading team.

It was at this point that, once again, the wheels came off the wagon. We finished pretty poorly, with two consecutive 7/10 rounds, and dropped down the leaderboard to finish fourth on 89/100. 🙁

This is an annual event on the Claremorris quizzing calendar and attracts a regular crowd of hardcore sports fans. The pressure is pretty intense as teams in the room will score 9/10 more often than not. Ourselves, for instance, we scored four perfect rounds, including the pictures (see below). Thus we knew that, finishing as we did, we hadn’t a hope of getting anything.

For the record, the winners (table 16) scored 93/100, with two teams just behind them on 92. That pair of teams forwent the option of a playoff and simply divided up the second and third prizes between them. By my count there were 18 teams in the room.

The quizmaster, Kevin, did a good job keeping the show going albeit he was left stranded by a couple of questions, which were written by someone else, having more than one correct answer. Cue a lot of heckling! He handled it well though, allowing a couple of extras and, more impressively, disallowing a few also.

Game, set, penalty shootout… answers

November 26, 2013 in Quizzes

high-kingsWith respect to yesterday morning’s post, I must admit I wrote it in a bit of a rush. This was probably quite obvious as I (a) never told you whether we won the playoff and (b) forgot to add the footnotes to the bottom of the post. Apologies all.

Last things first, I can reveal that we did indeed win! We got five of the six correct, beating our opponents by one. I’ll outline the answers (and tell you which one we missed) before the end of the post.

Oh yes, I also need to tell you all about the ‘guess’.

Firstly, let’s be honest no-one at a quiz ever really guesses. By which I mean the let’s-just-pick-a-random-name-and-hope guess – what I’d call a pure guess. I suppose you might make that kind of guess in a situation where you genuinely haven’t a clue of where to even begin with an answer and reckon ‘there’s no point putting up a blank answer’. However, one of these guesses coming in and getting you a point is the equivalent of picking a winning lottery number. Very, very rare!

Most of the time we make educated guesses, with the level of education on the given issue varying wildly. I think it was in the World Quizzing Championship this year that, when asked to name a specific Korean film director, I wrote down “Park”. I haven’t a clue about Korean film directors but I do know that Park is a very common Korean surname. Whaddya know – it was the correct answer!

Last Friday night, we had a guess which involved probably the smallest amount of education possible. We were asked:

If Clancy, Holden and Dunphy are three of The High Kings, who is the fourth?

Game, set, penalty shootout, match?

November 25, 2013 in Quizzes

tennis-ball-netStrangely it seems, the more involved in international championships I get, the less I take part in table quizzes. Of course, by that I mean the less I take part in table quizzes, as a contestant. I’ve been involved in loads of quizzes over this calendar year but as a question setter and quizmaster.

So last Friday night’s Claremorris Tennis Club table quiz was a nice opportunity to ‘get back in the game’ as it were. I attended on the invite of Andrew, one of the captains on my radio quiz show, After the Fact. To complete the team, he had lined up Lorraine, his nemesis on ATF and his own brother Paul.

The quiz was down for 9pm so, of course, it didn’t start until around half-past. After that though, the quizmistress ran a pretty tight ship, moving through each round quickly, getting the answer sheets collected and getting on the next one. Other quiz hosts please take note!

Answers for everybody in the audience

October 25, 2013 in Quizzes

bundle-eurosHere are the answers to the questions I posted at the start of the week.

Just before I get to them though, I just want to let you know about a massive quiz I’ve just heard of. St. Brigid’s GAA Club will host what they are calling their “First International Sports Quiz” on November 29th in the Hodson Bay Hotel, just outside Athlone. Sports fans will surely be tempted as there is a massive prize fund in place: €6,000 in total!

That’s right, €3,000 for first prize, with second and third ‘only’ getting €2,000 and €1,000. On the flip side, you’d have to be confident about your level of knowledge. The entrance fee is an eye-watering €200 for a table of four.

There’s a bit more info in the quiz calendar. I’ll do a fuller report on this (given that it’s so close to me) when I find out more.

Update: Here is the entry form for the St Brigid’s Quiz. Closing date for entries, November 15th.

Now, on with the answers….
