Do you know Jack’s answers?

March 21, 2012 in Quizzes

Here are the answers to the questions and picture rounds posted in Do you know jack? the other day.

Often, a winning team is faced with a dilemma with their winnings, if those winnings are cash.  Thankfully, this wasn’t a problem for ourselves on Friday last as we got a (non-Christmassy) hamper featuring bottles of whiskey, yummy Kettle Chips and Easter Eggs.  It genuinely was a hamper as it came in a nice wicker basket and, obviously enough, featured four of each item thus preventing any arguments breaking out over the Easter Eggs. 🙂

Click the link to see the answers. By-the-by, how did you do with that tricky final one? We thought the answer was obvious but, judging by the reaction in the room, that wasn’t the case at all tables.

Strangely, with all the quizzing that goes up and down this land, it’s rare that a quiz establishes itself sufficiently that it becomes an annual event.  The Claremorris AFC sports quiz is one such contest but they’re quite rare.

So it was cool that, last Friday night, Ger and myself entered the Ballyhaunis Town FC quiz in The Hazel bar as the defending champions.  12 months ago we’d had a very good night in the company of my father and father-in-law.  Not only did we win the quiz, but we also won most of the raffle prizes!

This year, the quiz veterans were both otherwise engaged so we had to call upon two chaps of our own vintage: Kevin and Adrian. Our team turned out to be, erm, a bit better than everyone else in the room and we ended up winning by just 14 points.  eek! 🙂  We finished on 92/100 and no-one else broke 80.

We only won a bottle of wine in the raffle though…

I returned to the blog yesterday after a hiatus of almost three months and, if my site’s stats aren’t damned lies, over 100 people called in to view the new post.  Thanks everyone!

Before I reveal the answers to the questions I posted, I did say I’d come clean on my good fortune in the raffle.

To be honest, it wasn’t much to write home about.  First prize was announced as a Barbecue. Yes, an actual barbecue! Don’t worry, I didn’t win that.

What I did win was second prize: a set of barbecue tools. 🙁

I ended up passing these to my team-mate Tom, as there is already a fine set of barbecue utensils in my shed. Still, it gave us a laugh on the night. 🙂

Just like the League of Ireland, it seems that my quizzing season has reorientated itself.  Gone are the days when quizzes were plentiful from October to April. Now, almost three months have passed by since I last caught wind of a quiz.  These are hard times indeed.

Sheridan’s Bar, Knocknacarra, was the venue for a quiz last night whose questions were exclusively based on football.  That is, soccer, if you’re not from round here.  Quizzes on single topics can be a bit of a drag but, hey, we were just looking for our quizzing fix.

That said, it nearly slipped under the radar.  The advertising budget for the quiz must have been kept to a minimum as my Galway contacts told me they’d first seen posters on Monday evening – for a quiz scheduled that Thursday.  Furthermore, an enquiry made by telephone yesterday afternoon led to a mixup that could have been straight out of The Two Ronnies.

“Hi. I’m just calling to ask about booking a table for the quiz tonight…”

“I’m sorry sir.  There’s already a quiz taking place tonight so you cannot book the bar.”

Oh, how I’d love if such a world existed where table quizzes were so popular that bars would have double-booking issues! Read the rest of this entry →
