No luck in Naas

October 16, 2013 in Housekeeping, Quizzes

John-banditThe Irish Blog Awards were handed out on Saturday night last in Naas. For the second year running, left empty-handed. 🙁

I guess I should be happy, all told. The site was chosen as a finalist in two categories this year, as opposed to one 12 months ago. However, when you’ve twice trucked all the way to Kildare and received nowt but some nicely designed (if hastily scrawled) certificates, it’s takes the wind out a little.

We did have a great night (see photo!). And hey, even if we didn’t win, we were there – which is more than can be said for the winners of 10-or-so categories. 😉

Anyway, back to the quizzing. Thursday evening will be busy as, after the usual live broadcast of After the Fact, I am the host of a table quiz in aid of Claremorris Community Radio.

There’s a great prize up for grabs, especially as we reach this time of year: a €500 voucher for Smyths’ Toys for the winning team!

The quiz is slated for 8.30pm in The Dalton Inn, Claremorris. Admission is €40 for a team of four. I hope to see you there.

Please note: I won’t be wearing the bandit mask on the night. Version 3

January 31, 2012 in Housekeeping

Welcome to the new-look  It’s the third version of the site and promises to be the most exciting yet.  From this day forth, we’ll have full social media features, forums and even (shock!) quizzes!

All these snazzy new features are available following my (belated) decision to move the site from to a stand-alone host.  However, a slight drawback to this move is that your username and password from the last site (which were only used for comments anyway) are no longer valid.  (Well, strictly speaking, they are still valid for your account.) You will have to register here. Just once, I promise, and it will allow you to do way more than just comment on articles!

The site is now three-and-a-half years old and I’m still finding stuff to talk about.  That said, the new system will allow anyone to bring something to the party: a web page or site, a video, a tricky question, almost anything. Let’s hope we all enjoy it!

Talk soon,

Is the iPhone ‘killing’ table quizzes?

March 29, 2010 in Culture, Thoughts

I don’t really go in for passing on other people’s content on this blog.  However, here’s an article that caught my eye in this week’s Sunday Independent.

iPhone ‘killing’ pub table quiz

Is the iPhone ruining the traditional pub table quiz? The gadget, which can acquire answers to general knowledge questions in an instant, is frustrating organisers and table quiz enthusiasts.

Cheating at table quizzes used to be very difficult. It would involve conspicuously hauling in 26 encyclopaedias on a two-wheel trolley or cunningly looking into your neighbour’s answer book. Now all you have to do is keep the iPhone underneath your table and search for the answer. Teams are getting full marks in every round.
