Trivia returns for round two

September 13, 2012 in Culture

David Pearse and Janet Moran, the stars of Trivia.

I blogged a lot about Trivia last year.  For a time, the show’s writer Damien Owens and myself were thrown together as a quiz-related double act, appearing in newspapers and on radio together, discussing all things quizzing.

For the uninitiated, Trivia was a comedy-drama (dromedy, yes?) which followed the trials and tribulations of Lawrence, a man whose life involved very little more than table quizzes.  It ran for six episodes and followed Lawrence as he realised there was more to life than, you know, table quizzes.  By the end, he’d even managed to get himself a girlfriend!

That’s what it was about really.  “It was actually a show about a romance…” a friend’s mother opined as we discussed it following the show’s final episode.  Quizzing was just a device which both defined Lawrence’s (sad) life and allowed him to meet his someone special.

Anyway, Trivia returned to our screens last Thursday night.  This was a bit of a surprise to me as I’d have thought we’d be the first to know here on the blog!  It was, in fact, Mrs Tablequiz.net who mentioned, in an offhand fashion last Thursday, that she saw Trivia was going to be on the TV later that evening.

Since then, Grand Pictures, the production company have been in touch, asking me to give the new series a mention, which I am happy to do.  Worringly for those who are more interested in quizzes than in romance and life development [raises right hand] the first episode of the new series starts off with Lawrence in self-imposed exile from the table quiz scene. Let’s hope Lawrence can develope some form of quiz-life balance in the episodes ahead.  Either that or his money problems get solved by an extended run on a TV quiz game show!

Trivia is on RTÉ One at 10.15pm tonight.  You can also catch up on the first episde of the new series at www.rte.ie/drama/tv/featured/trivia/

Listen to the radio

October 3, 2011 in Quiz Show

Dear readers, sorry if I have been a bit sparing with the blog posts in the last week.  I have been busy preparing for the start of a new quiz show I am hosting on Claremorris Community Radio.  It’s called After the Fact and it’s broadcast on Thursday evenings at 7pm.

The first episode went out last Thursday and it’s now available online via the Claremorrisfm account on mixcloud.com.  Alas, I haven’t yet found a way of embedding mixcloud files directly into this site so the best I can do is point you in the direction of the specific programme. I hope you enjoy it!

Friday Five Trivia returns

July 22, 2011 in Podcast

After a two week hiatus, due to a severe bout of man-flu, my Friday Five Trivia podcast has returned to the airwaves – and to the audioboo system.

You can check it out below or via the oh-so-handy box on the right hand side of the page.

I have plans for these little quizzes.  For example, I’m thinking of doing at least one per month as an audio round or featuring dialogue clips.  What do people think?

Trivia with Tubridy

Here is the mp3 file of my appearance on the Tubridy radio show. Just click the play button to listen at your leisure.

I’m putting this here just in case the

on the RTÉ site becomes defunct some day.

Latest from the news room

February 3, 2011 in Housekeeping

Good afternoon all.  Firstly, I’ll be posting the answers to yesterday’s questions later on today.  But first I’m going to fill you in on how my day has been.

This morning started off with a disappointment as I received an email which told me that the article in the Irish Independent had been put back until “early next week”. Sad, true, but what can one do? When I hear any more about it I’ll let you know.

Not being a big fan of driving in the early morning, I had travelled up to Dublin last night and stayed with my friends Bob, Keith and Maurice, who very kindly gave me a bed and a parking space. Thanks lads.  I had been asked to present myself at the RTÉ Radio Centre at 10am, with my appearance on-air scheduled for 10.15.

I was quite surprised to find that, after kicking up my heels in a waiting room, I was basically brought straight into the studio when the call came.  I had presumed I’d meet the team beforehand, perhaps during the 10am news.  I was introduced to Ryan Tubridy during an ad break, so obviously our preliminaries were quite rushed. I wonder if all radio presenters have Tubridy’s ability to engage in banter while keeping an eye on a clock counting down? I hadn’t even noticed he was doing it until, just at the end of a sentence (in our private chat), he pushed up a fader and, almost in the same cadence, announced “And we’re back …” into the microphone!

Coming soon to a media outlet near you

February 1, 2011 in Apropos of Nothing

Trivia hits our TV screens on Thursday night at 10.15pm. This site’s own little contribution to the build-up to the show has certainly succeeded in getting the blog’s name out into the world at large.

Tablequiz.net and yours truly will feature in an article in this Thursday’s Irish Independent. I’ve known about that for almost a week now and was interviewed for it on Friday last.

However, I got a huge surprise this afternoon when I was contacted by a researcher on Ryan Tubridy’s radio show on 2FM, asking me to appear on the show on Thursday morning. I don’t know the exact time I’ll be on air, with the researcher only being able to estimate it’ll be between 9.30 and 10.30am.  If you’d like to hear what I have to say (or even what I sound like), tune in to 2FM or else via the station’s website, www.2fm.ie

Trivia talk

January 24, 2011 in Quiz Show

Trivia

Trivia is a six-part comedy-drama series, which starts on RTÉ One on February 3.  In the build-up to the first episode, I had a chat with writer Damien Owens about the show and his own quiz experiences.

Damien Owens is a writer of many talents.  The author of four published books, he even writes Chick Lit under a cunningly ambiguous pseudonym.  Trivia, which explores the relationships between the four members of a table quiz team, is his first TV show.

So what gave him the idea for the show?

“I had the idea for the lead character, Lawrence, first. He’s basically just an exaggerated version of myself. He’s obsessed with learning trivia.  I wanted him to have a crazy goal and I hit upon the idea that he’d want to win the table quiz in his local pub for 52 weeks in a row – a full year.  No-one else even knows he’s doing it but, to him, it’s the most important thing in the world.”
