When the Sun goes down… answers

July 26, 2013 in Quizzes

curious-incidentHere are the answers to the four picture rounds I posted at the start of the week.

Before that, just a little note for anyone interested in taking part in the August edition of the International Quizzing Association’s Hot-100. Those of you who live in the East of the country will be interested to hear that the IQO‘s Dublin heat will take place in The Brian Boru, Glasnevin, on Thursday, August 1st, at 8pm. For more info, check out this Facebook page. Come along and get yourself a world ranking!

Those of you who don’t live in the East (or feel like a trip to Dublin), fret not. There are small groups in existence in Mayo, Galway and Clare at the moment. Please contact the IQO if you’d like to take part in any of these and they’ll put you in contact.

Now, back to the main point of this post. Click the ‘Read the rest…’ link to see how you got on with those picture rounds.

When the Sun goes down

A very different quiz venue

How about this for a quiz venue?

Last Friday evening, I hosted a quiz in Headford, Co. Galway. It was in aid of the Solstice Arts Group, which is based in the town.

True to their modus operandi, the Solstice folks went above and beyond with their staging of the quiz at Campbell’s Tavern. It’s a bar situated in a quiet spot, just off the main road, with a nice beer garden. Seeing as we’ve been going through a heat wave recently, the idea cropped up that the quiz could take place outside. “Would you mind John?” I was asked. I jumped at the chance.

It was a lovely evening with a lovely crowd. That said, we did have a few teething problems. For instance, in the run up to the quiz I had put together four picture rounds. Yes, four! (I figured an arts group would enjoy the visual rounds). Anyway, we didn’t have a big screen set up so the pics rounds were on old-skool paper. Fine at the start of the night but by round 8, the teams were doing their best to recognise the pics using the nightlights in the middle of their tables!

Behold! Some quizzing

July 16, 2013 in Housekeeping, IQO, Quizzes

desert-oasisI don’t know about where you live but round here (west of the Shannon) it is most definitely quizzing off-season.

What is a quiz addict to do? I guess you take your quizzing fun where you can. For instance, I am hosting a quiz this Friday evening. Ok, it’s vicarious quizzing for yours truly but at least it will get me out of the house my brain into quiz mode.

It might also be good for you, if you live in the Galway area. The quiz is in aid of the Solstice Arts Group, which is based in Headford. It will take place in Campbell’s Tavern, Cloughanover (which is on Headford end of the Galway-Headford Road) and kicks off at 8.30pm. Expect a wide selection of arty questions. 😉

If you don’t live around Galway though, fear not. Ireland’s two largest cities now have a central information point for quizzes in their area. The Irish Quiz Organisation has created two new Facebook pages to co-ordinate and promote quizzes in Dublin and Cork. Presuming you’re already a member of Facebook you can check them out at the following addresses: / These are just the first two such pages – other regions will be given their own pages in the near future.

Finally, good news for fans of After the Fact. The show’s third series will begin with a live broadcast on Friday, August 9th, at 8pm, as part of the Claremorris Community Radio Broadcastathon. I’ll post more about the show as that date approaches.
