Dutch_Grand_PrixAs the school Summer holidays come to an end, the world of quizzing starts to gear up.

The IQO is just as much a part of this increase in quizzing activity. It will host two Grand Prix events over the coming months, one each in September and October.

On September 7th, what is fast becoming the IQO’s base in Dublin, the Addison Lodge will be the venue for the first of these. In conjunction with the British Quiz Association, this event will see attendees taking part in this year’s British Quizzing Championship. That’s right, you’ll be going up against some of the best in the business in their own championship!

So what will it involve? It’s a two-part paper, just like the World Quiz Championships. Here’s the skinny from the BQA:

The first part is Art & Culture (“think WQC ‘Culture’ and ‘History’ together”), Civilisation (“think WQC ‘World’ with politics and business”), Entertainment (“includes what’s in ‘Media’ in WQC”). The second paper features Lifestyle, Physical World (“sciences, including nature and physical geography”), and Sport/Games.

The day will also feature this month’s Hot 100 World Rankings quiz. For more info on that, please visit

It’s open to all and starts with registration in the venue at 10.30am. Paper 1 will begin at 11 am.

The IQO’s October Grand Prix will allow competitors to take on the best quizzers in a different country – and in a different county. This event will be a satellite of the DQV‘s 2013 German Open and will take place in a non-Dublin venue on October 5th. I’ll have more information on this later event, including a venue (!), over the coming weeks.

Both of these events are part of the run-in to the European Quiz Championships 2013, which this year take place in Liverpool at the start of November. Rankings points from these events will go towards the selection of teams for Liverpool. You can check out the current rankings list on the quizireland website.

Entry fees (The IQO is going to trial a two-for-one package in relation to these events):

  • Entry for September Grand Prix (plus Hot 100): €15
  • Entry for October Grand Prix: €10
  • Package to enter both (payable at Sept GP): €20
