Quizzing opportunities and answers

January 11, 2013 in Quiz Show, Quizzes

victoria-corenI’ve been notified of a couple of opportunities for quizzing in the last week. Firstly, the first-ever Tri-Nations Quizzing Tournament, featuring teams from Ireland, Scotland and Wales will take place in Edinburgh on the last weekend of April this year. This weekend of quizzing promises to be great fun and allows quizzers from each country to sample international quizzing. For more information, the Irish Quiz Organisation page on Facebook will keep you updated over the next few weeks.

Does anyone fancy meeting Victoria Coren?* If you do, and you live somewhere in the UK**, the producers of fiendish BBC television show Only Connect are currently seeking contestants for their next series. You can find more info by checking out this handy PDF file.

Finally, the answers to the sporting questions posed on Monday last (A podium place) are posted after the Read the rest… Click to see how you got on.

A podium place

January 7, 2013 in Quizzes

This time last year our sporting knowledge team had a bit of a nightmare at the annual Claremorris AFC Sports Quiz.

quiz-books-smFor those who don’t recall (and are too lazy to click the link above), our group was in contention throughout the night before taking the lead after round 8. Alas, we came unstuck in the very next round and collapsed to outside of the top 5 places.

This year things didn’t turn out that bad – whilst not being as good either. We seemed to the spend the whole night in third place and where did we end up finishing? Yup, third place.

We did have an enjoyable night all round. This started in the bar before-hand, where we encountered a novel form of fundraising: quiz books! Cancer Care West are selling a series of sports trivia quiz books as a money raiser. Pick up one if you see them as they’re a great idea. Then again, I might be biased!

The main event was very nicely run. Unfortunately for the organisers there wasn’t a huge crowd in. Somewhere in the region of 14 tables took part in what is normally a sell-out event. Consensus decided that a rival sports club’s running of a poker night across town was largely to blame for this.

Defeat from the jaws of victory: answers

January 19, 2012 in Quizzes

Here are the answers to the (sports) questions posed earlier in the week in Defeat from the jaws of victory.

I’d like to tell you about one more unpleasant thing that happened at this quiz.

A member of a team who are, apparently, in the hunt for victory each year in this quiz copped on pretty early that we were a serious team.  This chap got in to the habit of coming by our table after each round to see how we’d got on.  We were sitting near the bar so I guess he could claim that he was (always) just on his way up for a drink but we thought his intention was clear enough – he was worried about how well we were doing.

Now, whenever I’m doing a quiz I tend to put my phone out on the table.  I don’t think there’s any need to deny that I own a phone.  Also, I’m not doing anything surreptitious with it, so what have I got to hide?  At the midway interval, your man came over to see how we’d got on with the previous round.  We told him we’d definitely missed the Italian scorer in the Premier League question below.  “Are ye sure?” he asked. “Yeah, we’ve just looked up the answer on the phone,” we told him*. He did a very dramatic ‘Tut, tut’ thing and moved on.

Anyway, so what, you’re asking.

Well, after the picture round, when we weren’t at our most ebulient, he arrives over to see how we’ve done.

“We’re out of it” we tell him. “We only got seven of them.”

“Seven?!” he said, his tone indicating that they’d done much better.  “Well, I guess ye couldn’t look them up on the phone.”

What. A. P&:<k.

Defeat from the jaws of victory

January 16, 2012 in Quizzes

Before we get into 2012 on the blog I must tell you all about my very disappointing end to the 2011 quiz year.  Expect the worst and all your surprises will be happy ones, they say.  The opposite of this being that, just when you think you’re doing well, the rug will get pulled out from under you.

And so it was, at the annual Claremorris AFC Sports Quiz, which took place in the Dalton Inn on the Wednesday before Christmas.  RTÉ’s Martin Carney was the host, for reasons I couldn’t fathom.  He added a little glamour to the whole occasion I guess!

It was my first time taking part in the event but I’d heard great things about it.  The questions were said to be of a very hard standard with a great variety of sporting knowledge needed to prosper.  So, being in contention throughout the night before hitting the front after round 8 would be something to be thrilled about, surely?

In quizzing, as in sport, how a result arrives dominates the memory of the result itself. Who’s more happy with a 2-2 draw – the team that lead 2-0 or the team that pulled back the two goal deficit? Yet, they both finished with the same result, didn’t they?

FIFA World Cup quiz

June 15, 2010 in Quizzes

Robert Green says "Oh Oh"In honour of the start of the 2010 World Cup, here’s a round of 15 questions about this festival of football.

I actually wrote most of this quiz four years ago and, back then, posted it on my old Bebo account.

Let’s see if I still have any friends left from those days! 😉

Drivetime Sport’s Irish Soccer clips

March 30, 2009 in Quizzes

Somebody behind the scenes at Drivetime Sport on Radio One must be a quizzing fan. Perhaps it’s Des Cahill himself?  Where other shows would have one simple question and a phone number, competitions on RTÉ’s early evening show tend to engage the brain and the trivia gland.

Last week, in the buildup to the Irish football team’s two big games against Bulgaria and Italy, they ran a competition for a trip for two to the away game in Bari on Wednesday night, with flights and accommodation thrown in.

Entry was simple. Each night, from Monday to Thursday, they played the same three clips, back-to-back. All one had to do was email in the names of the players who scored immediately after the commentary was cut off.  Sort of like a ‘What happened next’ round.
